Ceiling Fan Height From Roof

Most ceilings are 8 feet high.
Ceiling fan height from roof. The optimum mounting height for a ceiling fan is 8 to 9 feet above the floor with a minimum of 7 feet for safety. For safety the bottom of the fan needs to be at least 7 feet above the floor. However some manufacturers will include a 6 inch downrod. For adequate air circulation the fan blades should hang 8 inches or more from the ceiling.
Most ceiling fans come with three inch downrods that suspend the fan blades. You will want your new ceiling fan to hang between 8 and 9 above the floor regardless of ceiling height. When you hang a normal ceiling fan with a 3 4 downrod from a ceiling that is 8 feet high the blades will be about 7 feet from the floor. So whatever your ceiling height is in feet buy a downrod that will put the top base of the fan at 10 feet.
Standard ceiling fans include a downrod ranging in length from 2 inches to 10 inches which is suitable for standard size rooms with a ceiling height of eight to nine feet. For every two inches of ceiling clearance below this minimum airflow through the fan decreases by as much as 25 percent. Conversely spaces in the home with limited ceiling to floor height think bedrooms offices breakfast nooks etc require a low profile or flushmount ceiling fan. We also recommend the standard downrod on a 9 foot ceiling.
Most fan bodies including mounting hardware are 8 to 12 inches. However fan downrods can range all the way up to 177 inches depending on the manufacturer. Most ceiling fans come ready to install on an 8 ceiling. This will keep the blades at least 7 feet off the ground.
This keeps the fan at least 7 above the floor and still provides for good air flow.
